Interactive Imagery
Interactive imagery is a unique form of visualization in that it is very "permissive," as opposed to therapist-directed. The technique utilizes holistic images and sensations developed entirely by, and therefore meaningful exclusively to, the client. When the clients are able to conjure their own images, they feel empowered to use those images to search for self-evident meaning. The therapist assumes the role of "guide" only, recognizing that the client is the expert of his or her own experience and, as such, has all "the answers" but may just need a way of accessing them. This workshop consists of several experiential exercises supported by lecture and demonstration. It will be very relaxed, so it is suggested that attendees wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes. The purpose of this workshop is to introduce attendees to a specific genre of imagery that is very powerful in drawing on the full mind/body/spirit experience in therapy. Attendees will learn how to guide their clients to: have conversations with their physical symptoms of pain, illness, anxiety or depression; block pain or anxiety when needed; unlock creative blocks; experience mini-vacations without leaving their living rooms; meet both sides of a dilemma and come to a compromise that actually works; meet the committee that directs their self talk; or relive past experiences as they should have been. The workshop is led by Christine L. Garwick-Foley, MA, LPC. After a twenty-year career in publications marketing, I decided that I wanted to work in a field where I could have a positive effect on others and help them grow, heal, and thrive. I earned my Masters degree from Adler Graduate School in 1998 and have been fortunate to be able to work in the field ever since, first as a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC), and then as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in independent private practice. My practice is based on the knowledge that we are all holistic beings with physical, emotional and spiritual dimensions, dynamically interwoven to produce the unique individuals we are. I am particularly interested in the influence of bio-chemistry (nutritional and environmental factors) and physiology on behavior and, conversely, how one's belief systems influence one's physical health. I am certified in Interactive Guided Imagery (sm) and Thought Field Therapy, and have additional training in behavioral nutrition, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR ), and NeuroModulation Technique therapy. In addition to working directly with clients, I have taught psychology courses in the online venue for over twelve years. Adler Graduate School has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6915. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Adler Graduate School is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
