Beyond Oktoberfest: 5 Cocktail Spots to Try in Minneapolis This Fall

Minneapolis (Sept. 23, 2019) The festive focus of the next month will have lots of German influences, and Minneapolitans know how to celebrate Oktoberfest. In fact, we have a lot of them, thanks to numerous tap rooms with countless brews and even more (non-German themed) beer events. But this fall, after the lederhosen is worn out and the pretzels are stale, you may be looking to step out and try the hot-hot-hot cocktail scene in Minneapolis. Here are five spots that will keep you in good spirits after Oktoberfest:
 
  1. Giulia’s Bar Surprise
Sure, you can get Draft House Negroni (on tap!). But when you check out the new, daily happy hour menu by Executive Chef Josh Hedquist, consider leaving your drink to fate – and your bartender. The Bartender “Inspiration Creation Cocktail,” featuring rotating experimental cocktails, means there’s always something new and you’ll never got bored.

2.    Tattersall Distilling Tasty Tours
On Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. take a 30- to 45-minute tour of the Northeast distiller’s vast spaces (which are expanding by 7,000 square feet to double barrel storage this fall). You’ll enjoy spirit tastings and a tasting glass souvenir for only $15. For those on the go, watch for their new cocktail room at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport next month in Terminal 1 near Gate A.

3.    Colita’s Fermented Concoctions
Head to Southwest Minneapolis for the unusual cocktails by Marco Zappia, who also runs the bar at Martina. He created a mixology manual for bar staff, ferments all the ingredients (think: birch-honey, rose, agave) and invents drinks you won’t find anywhere else in the Minneapolis area – or the world.

4.    Marvelous Marvel
The secret bar beneath Bachelor Farmer is not as clandestine since their bar program has been lauded by the James Beard Foundation and others. The master mixology continues to dazzle with hand-crafted, original cocktails, and they stir things up with their Exploration Series. Next up: Brandy. Marvel’s Sept. 24 event provides an intimate lesson on three brandy-based favorites.

5.    Best Back Bar at Young Joni
Hidden in plain sight, you must look for the red light to find the entrance off the alley behind Ann Kim’s Young Joni restaurant. Kim, winner of this year’s James Beard Foundation Best Chef: Midwest award, created a cozy, laid-back atmosphere that is as appealing as the drinks are nostalgic.
