Focus Luncheon Series: How to Avoid Liability Arising from HR Issues: Hiring to Firing and Everything in Between!
Too often managers and other company officials have insufficient legal knowledge and experience regarding claims that can arise out of the employer-employee relationship. This session will provide management and human resources professionals with a general overview of state and federal laws that define the employment relationship, including: discrimination, breach of contract, whistleblower, retaliation, defamation, and tortious interference with contract. It will also offer practical information on how to reduce the risk of liability arising from employment issues, as well as how to conduct performance appraisals properly so that they can be a truly effective management tool.
This presentation will cover a wide variety of topics regarding the employment relationship, including:
- Common risks involved in the hiring process, from interview to job offer
- Issues that can develop during the course of employment including compliance with state and federal discrimination and leave laws
- Best practices when implementing a performance appraisal process
- Suggestions for practical disciplinary and termination decision-making processes
