MRA is partnering with Hellmuth & Johnson to provide updates on leave laws recently passed in MN, those that are coming in the near future, and MN’s new non-compete law. Mary Ellen Reihsen is a labor and employment attorney with Hellmuth & Johnson. Mary Ellen will provide a general overview of the 2023 changes in Minnesota law impacting employers and an update on the legislative changes that will be in place by May 20, 2024, including the upcoming paid MN family leave and the MN earned sick and safe time benefit. David Hellmuth is an attorney with Hellmuth & Johnson. David will be speaking on Minnesota’s New Non-Compete Law.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn what is covered and the requirements of the American Disabilities Act, Family Medical Leave Act, Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, and the Minnesota Earned Sick and Safe Time Act.
- Be able to explain reasonable accommodations as it relates to each act.
- Learn the exceptions and how to apply the requirements of a reasonable accommodation.
- Understand the types of leaves that can occur under FMLA.
- Explain what is prohibited by employers under the PWFA.
- List the responsibilities of employers under the Minnesota Earned Sick and Safe Time Act.

Session 1: Minnesota 2023 and 2024 Legislative Changes Overview

This session will provide a general overview of the 2023 changes in Minnesota law impacting employers and an update on the legislative changes that will be in place by May 20, 2024, including revisions to the upcoming paid Minnesota family leave and potential new standards for subcontractors in Minnesota.
Session 2: Sick and Safe Leave

This session will provide a detailed walkthrough of requirements, options, and frequent issues navigating Minnesota earned sick and safe time benefit with a look at the new 2024 revised requirements.
Session 3: DEI: Minnesota Non-Compete Law

This session will provide an overview of Minnesota’s new non-compete law (Minnesota Statute Section 181.988) including what is prohibited, the scope of prohibitions, and exceptions. This session will also cover the choice of law and venue clauses (Subdivision 3).
Q&A
This 30-minute Q&A session will provide the opportunity for participants to ask questions and seek clarification on the topics covered.
